I came to Charlottesville in the late summer of 1990 to attend the University of Virginia, and like so many others who have come to this beautiful city under similar circumstances, I never left. In the intervening thirty-one years, I have planted deep roots in this community where my wife and I are now raising a family.
After graduating from the Curry School of Education, I spent a number of years teaching civics and economics in the Greene County Public Schools. It was during this time teaching middle school children about their government (and coaching a little football) that I developed a deep appreciation for the importance of civic engagement in a vital, functioning democracy. I now practice what I once preached as an elected public servant.
In 2002, I married my best friend Annie and we soon moved into our home in the Greenbrier Heights neighborhood. Our family has grown to include two wonderful boys, Mason and Nolan. We cannot imagine a better place to raise them than in Charlottesville.
In 2005, I went to work for a small full-service sign shop, one of the many small businesses that form the backbone of this community. I quickly discovered that sign shops are uniquely situated to come into contact with many other small businesses, assisting them at the most formative stage of their development—literally the moment when entrepreneurs hang out their “shingle” in order to make their way in the world. I believe that these experiences and sensitivities have been an asset when it comes to helping small business owners navigate their way through licensing and taxation issues.
In 2013, I was elected to my first term as Charlottesville's Commissioner of the Revenue. I have immensely enjoyed the small part I have played in the life of this community by virtue of that position. It has been the honor of a lifetime. With your support, I hope to continue serving this community that has given us so much.
